Abstract : The wide-band, echolocating sonar signals of bats are investigated with reference to statistical estimation theory to ascertain the implications of this class of signals. The work is divided into four major sections: (1) The concept of an ideal receiver for the simultaneous measurement of range and velocity of a target is extended to cover wide-band signals; (2) angular localization of a target by means of a fixed, gain-dispersive antenna in the presence of additive Gaussian noise is studied; (3) an ambiguity diagram computer is designed and built which calculates the signal function, defined in Chapter 2, of an arbitrary waveform; and (4) ambiguity diagrams are calculated for several types of bat sonar signals emitted by the bat Myotis lucifugus and one cruising signal emitted by the bat Lasiurus borealis.
