EVALUATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL DISPLAYS FOR PROTECTED/PERMISSIVE LEFT-TURN CONTROL

Abstract

This report recommends traffic signal displays for protected/permissive left-turn control. The recommendations are based on a comprehensive evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of alternative traffic signal displays and phasing through laboratory and field studies. These studies are summarized in the report and detailed information on them is available on the enclosed CD-ROM, CRP-CD-35. Traffic signal designers and operators will find the report informative, as will those interested in human factors research. A key audience for the report will be those responsible for the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) because it is intended that the recommendations be considered for the next edition.
