by furfural alone, it is probably the product of condensation of the -CHO group of furfural (HMF in hexoses) with the sugar molecule. SUMMARY 1. The conversion of several sugars to furan derivatives at 600 in 28-3N-sulphuric acid was followed spectroscopically. Variations in the ap- parent yields and in the shapes of the absorption spectra were attributed to two other absorbing compounds, which were formed at the expense ofthe furan derivatives in amounts dependent on the configuration of the sugars.
