UITP has compiled a database of 100 of the world's cities, known as the Millennium Cities Database for Sustainable Transport, in collaboration with Murdock University, Australia. The collected data looks at population, the economy and urban structure, the number of road vehicles, taxis, the road network, parking, public transport networks, individual mobility and choice of transport mode, transport system efficiency and environmental impact. In total, over 200 indicators were collected for each of the 100 cities for 1995. This database has allowed UITP to draw up a set of arguments in favor of sustainable mobility and public transport, and this information will allow mobility providers to evaluate the performance of cities and public transport networks and construct an argument adapted to their own particular situation. The environment and social benefits of sustainable transportation have always been recognized but not considered to be key components of a dynamic urban economy; however, today they have a growing influence and they need to become mainstream to ensure future growth.
