Abstract

kinds of patients attracted and the travel costs they are willing to incur. Populations in turn vary in their preference for hospitals of different kinds, in their ability to pay and in their location with respect to hospitals. This paper explores one kind of relationship whether the pattern of distances patients travel to hospitals varies according to kind of hospital. Hospitals are perceived by the population to offer a supply of services at particular points. The spatial distribution of patients is one empirical measure of the demand for these services.
