Cultured uveal melanocytes can produce melanin in vitro. Cultured uveal melanocytes isolated from eyes of different iris color maintained their inherent capacity for melanogenesis. Therefore, cultured uveal melanocytes are an excellent model system for studying melanogenesis in uveal melanocytes in vitro.
